After an eight-year delay, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is moving forward with a pilot pay-and-park system on four major roads: Jangli Maharaj Road, Fergusson College Road, Laxmi Road, and Balewadi High Street. This initiative aims to tackle severe traffic congestion and improve the efficiency of parking spaces. The parking charges will be demand-based, differing from the fixed geographical rates used in other cities. Currently, Pune has over 4 million registered vehicles, with an influx of 500 to 700 new vehicles daily, exacerbating traffic and pollution issues. Political parties have voiced their opposition, arguing that the system could burden citizens amid rising inflation and inadequate public transport. Under the proposed policy, parking rates for two-wheelers will range from ₹2 to ₹4 per hour for on-street parking, while four-wheelers will incur charges between ₹10 and ₹20 per hour. Violators will face fines that escalate for repeat offenses, with significant penalties for parking in restricted areas. The PMC aims to finalize the contractor for this pilot project soon.
