In a significant move to enhance road safety at the Navale Bridge stretch in Pune, Maharashtra, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has installed 14 new CCTV cameras and three high-speed gantry cameras. These installations, completed over the past two weeks, are integrated with the police control room, allowing for 24x7 real-time monitoring of traffic. This initiative aims to improve emergency response times during accidents and reduce congestion in this accident-prone area, known for its steep gradient and heavy vehicle traffic. To further enhance safety, the speed limit on this stretch has been reduced from 60 km/h to 40 km/h, with automatic penalties for speeding enforced through the new CCTV system. Additional safety measures include the installation of 20-millimetre-high rumble strips, reflective cat-eyes, improved lane markings, and digital display boards providing real-time updates on traffic and weather conditions. Sanjay Kadam, project director at NHAI Pune, emphasized the importance of these measures in preventing accidents and ensuring better control for drivers, particularly on the descending stretch of the bridge.
