New Delhi is grappling with a severe waste management crisis, as its three major landfill sites—Okhla, Bhalswa, and Ghazipur—collectively hold over 77.29 lakh metric tonnes of waste. As of December, Okhla alone had 26.38 lakh metric tonnes of waste, while Bhalswa and Ghazipur contributed 47.97 lakh metric tonnes and 77.29 lakh metric tonnes, respectively. The city generates more than 14,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste daily, yet the processing capacity is only 7,641 tonnes per day, leading to a processing gap of around 4,200 tonnes. To address this, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is set to launch new installations that will convert 6,000 metric tonnes of fresh waste into manure, enhancing waste processing capabilities. Despite the ongoing efforts, officials acknowledge that the clean-up of accumulated waste will take time due to its extensive buildup over decades.
