The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has taken significant action against the Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) over complaints regarding waste dumping near schools in Safdarjung Enclave, South Delhi. A local resident, Bhupendra Kumar Gupta, filed a plea highlighting the health hazards posed to thousands of children attending schools adjacent to the dumping site on Chaudhary Jhandu Singh Marg. In its order dated April 9, the NGT directed the MCD to implement appropriate remedial measures and instructed the DPCC to conduct a detailed site inspection. Both agencies are required to submit their responses by the next hearing on July 14. The NGT's decision follows a history of similar complaints, leading to the shutdown of waste sites near schools and hospitals in the past. For instance, in January 2023, the MCD reported the closure of a dumping site in west Delhi’s Hari Nagar, while in October 2022, the NGT mandated the shutdown of another site near AIIMS. The tribunal has previously upheld fines against the MCD for neglecting waste management in sensitive areas, emphasizing the need for immediate action to protect public health.
