Super Typhoon Sinlaku is rapidly approaching the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam, with landfall anticipated on Tuesday. The National Weather Service reports that the storm is producing sustained winds of 173 mph (278 km/h), making it the strongest tropical cyclone of the year. Residents of Guam, a US territory, are under a tropical storm warning as damaging winds are expected to begin Monday. The US Coast Guard has issued flood and high wind warnings in preparation for the storm. Emergency disaster declarations were approved by former President Donald Trump for both Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands, facilitating additional support for emergency services. While Sinlaku is expected to weaken slightly, it is projected to cross near the islands as a category 4 or 5 typhoon, which corresponds to the most intense storms in the north-western Pacific. Since 1947, over 300 super typhoons have been identified by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, which monitors these powerful storms.
