The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is in the process of upgrading 70 older trains on the Blue and Red metro lines to improve passenger safety and comfort. These trains, known as RS-1, were introduced between 2002 and 2007 and have been in service for nearly 19 to 24 years. The refurbishment is being carried out in phases, with 12 trains already upgraded in Phase 1. Currently, 36 trains are undergoing refurbishment in Phase 2, and a total of 22 Blue Line trains are scheduled for revamp by November 2027. Key improvements include a new fire detection system, upgraded electrical panels, and the installation of state-of-the-art Passenger Announcement and Information Systems (PA-PIS) along with CCTV systems and LCD-based Dynamic Route Maps (DRM). These enhancements aim to provide real-time information and improve communication during emergencies. DMRC assures that the upgrades are being conducted without disrupting travel, as work is done one train at a time.
