A fire broke out at the Bandhwari landfill along the Gurugram–Faridabad Road on Wednesday evening, rapidly escalating into a major blaze that produced thick, toxic smoke affecting nearby areas such as Bandhwari village and Gwal Pahari. Residents reported breathing difficulties due to the smoke, raising alarms about the recurring issue of landfill fires. Firefighters from multiple stations deployed approximately 10 fire engines to combat the flames, but operations were hampered by the vast size of the landfill. Senior officials from the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) were present at the scene, and municipal commissioner Pradeep Dahiya stated that the fire was nearly under control. However, Harbeer Harsana, the village head, voiced concerns over the alarming scale of the fire, which was visible from five kilometers away. Environmentalist Vaishali Rana noted that such fires are often caused by methane gas from decomposing waste, which can ignite when exposed to air and heat. The landfill has a history of fire incidents, with over 80 cases reported between March and June in 2025, underscoring the need for improved waste management and fire prevention strategies.
