The suburban district collectorate in Mumbai has mandated a diagnostic check of electronic voting machines (EVMs) used in the November 2024 assembly elections, following a ruling from the Bombay High Court. This order, issued by Archana Kadam, the deputy district returning officer, allows for the inspection of EVMs to address ongoing concerns about transparency and potential bias in favor of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The inspection will take place on April 16 and 17 and will be conducted by Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), the manufacturer of the EVMs, in the presence of Congress leader Arif Naseem Khan and election officials. Khan, who challenged his electoral defeat in the Chandivali assembly constituency, emphasized the significance of this ruling as it marks the first time a court in India has permitted such an inspection. He will be allowed to verify the memory and microcontroller of the EVMs to check for tampering. The Congress party, led by figures like Rahul Gandhi, has consistently raised allegations of EVM manipulation and has directed its candidates to seek verification of Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) units in their respective constituencies.
