On Tuesday, Mumbai's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched India's first pod taxi project, designed to improve last-mile connectivity between Kurla and the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The 8.85-km Automated Rapid Transit System will feature 22 air-conditioned stations spaced approximately 200 meters apart. Phase I will cover a 3.36-km stretch connecting key areas such as LBS Marg and Kalanagar. The innovative, driverless pods will operate on battery power, accommodating up to six passengers at a maximum speed of 40 km/h and with a headway of 15 seconds. This project, executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), will be implemented through a public-private partnership, ensuring no financial burden on the state government. It aims to reduce traffic congestion, improve travel times, and promote eco-friendly mobility, with an anticipated daily ridership of over 1.09 lakh passengers by 2031. The system will also integrate with existing metro lines, enhancing Mumbai's multi-modal transport network.
