The Thane–Borivali twin tunnel project in Maharashtra, India, is officially underway with the launch of Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) Nayak by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. This ambitious project, approved in 2023, aims to create an 11.84-km road link that will drastically reduce travel time between Borivali and Ghodbunder Road from 60-90 minutes to just 15 minutes. TBM Nayak, which stands over 13 meters tall, is expected to excavate about 10 meters of rock per day, reaching Borivali by 2028. The tunnel will run beneath the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, adding to its complexity. A second TBM, named Arjuna, will also be deployed to create a parallel tunnel. However, progress has been hindered on the Borivali side due to delays in the arrival of machinery and the relocation of approximately 70 out of 572 affected residents. The project is contracted to M/s Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited, with consultancy from M Hill-TCE Joint Venture.
