Mumbai's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched the groundbreaking ceremony for India's first driverless pod taxi system, an Automated Rapid Transit System designed to enhance last-mile connectivity between Kurla and the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC). The 8.85-km project will feature 22 air-conditioned stations spaced approximately 200 meters apart, with Phase I covering a 3.36-km stretch expected to be completed within ten months. The driverless pods, powered by batteries and equipped with AI, will carry up to six passengers at a maximum speed of 40 km/h, stopping only at stations selected by passengers. This innovative transit solution aims to reduce traffic congestion, cut travel times, and promote eco-friendly mobility, with an anticipated daily ridership of over 1.09 lakh passengers by 2031. The project will be executed under a public-private partnership, ensuring no financial burden on the state government. It will also integrate with existing metro lines, further strengthening Mumbai's multi-modal transport network.
