The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to install fencing along the city's stormwater drains to mitigate the problem of garbage disposal, which has significantly contributed to flooding in Mumbai. The fencing, proposed to be eight feet high with an additional one-foot bend, aims to deter residents, particularly in slum areas, from throwing waste into the drainage system. This decision was prompted by a recent inspection of the Dadar-Dharavi drain, where officials noted severe garbage accumulation. The BMC has a vast network of 274 kilometers of major and 673 kilometers of minor drains, many of which are adjacent to slum areas. The fencing project is expected to be completed within two months before the onset of the monsoon season. Additionally, the BMC plans to repair gaps in the retaining walls of the Dadar-Dharavi drain to ensure safety for nearby residents. Environmental advocates, however, argue that fencing alone will not solve the problem and call for a comprehensive waste management strategy, including door-to-door waste collection and community education on responsible disposal practices.
