The Delhi government has approved a three-month extension of its Electric Vehicle (EV) Policy 2020, which will now remain in effect until June 30, 2024, or until a new policy is notified. This decision aims to ensure that benefits for EV buyers continue uninterrupted while the government finalizes the upcoming EV Policy 2026. The extension was approved by the cabinet earlier this week, with the draft of the new policy currently open for public comment. A senior transport department official stated that the extension would require approximately ₹19 crore (roughly $2.3 million USD) for disbursing purchase incentives, assuming full uptake by eligible EV registrations in Delhi. Additionally, the government expects to forgo around ₹131.37 crore (roughly $15.8 million USD) in revenue due to ongoing exemptions from road tax and registration fees for electric vehicles. The existing EV policy has been instrumental in promoting the adoption of EVs through subsidies, tax waivers, and support for charging infrastructure since its introduction in 2020. This extension is designed to benefit both consumers and industry stakeholders as the new policy is developed.
