The Delhi government has announced a plan to replace 140,000 Chinese-made CCTV cameras installed across the city, as confirmed by Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh. This decision comes in light of security concerns regarding the use of Chinese surveillance equipment, particularly from manufacturers like Hikvision. Since 2020, a total of 274,389 CCTV cameras have been installed in Delhi, with 140,000 of these sourced from China during the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) regime. The first phase of the replacement will involve 50,000 cameras, ensuring that the transition does not disrupt ongoing surveillance operations. Singh emphasized the importance of security and accountability in managing sensitive data, contrasting the current government's approach with that of the previous administration, which he criticized for prioritizing numbers over security. Additionally, the Indian government has implemented new regulations that restrict the certification of Chinese products, further supporting the decision to replace these cameras. A comprehensive study of the existing CCTV network is also planned to enhance its effectiveness in crime prevention and investigation.
