The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has commenced the annual desilting of the Mithi River in Mumbai, focusing on low-lying embankments to prevent flooding during the upcoming monsoon season. This year, the BMC issued a tender worth ₹28 crore (approximately $3.4 million USD) for the desilting work, but only two bidders showed interest after the tender was extended multiple times. Last year, the desilting process was interrupted due to an investigation by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into a ₹1,100 crore (approximately $132 million USD) scam related to the river's maintenance. The river has a history of flooding, with water levels nearing the danger mark during heavy rains last August. BMC officials have set a target to complete 31% of the pre-monsoon desilting work this year. The entire 18-km stretch of the river will be divided into three segments, with the first package covering 11.8 km from Vihar Lake to Teacher's Colony, the second covering 1.3 km around the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), and the final stretch of 4.7 km near Dharavi and Mahim. The BKC area features a wider riverbed that can accommodate heavy rainfall, while the Mahim area benefits from a dense mangrove cover that helps mitigate flooding.
