The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has failed to meet its deadline for transforming Vyapar Kendra Road, Hamilton Road, and MG Road into model roads for the second consecutive time. Initially set to conclude by February 2025, the project has faced delays due to rising costs of raw materials, particularly bitumen, which has doubled from ₹40 per kg to ₹80 per kg amid disruptions caused by the West Asia conflict. GMDA officials report that 85% of the work is complete, with plans to finish by April 2026. The project aims to enhance infrastructure with three-lane carriageways, service roads, cycle tracks, and footpaths to manage traffic from nearby commercial areas. However, residents like Gauri Sarin and Prabhjyot Singh Panesar have raised concerns about the environmental impact, including the removal of thousands of trees and the ongoing dust pollution from the unfinished roads. The delays were also attributed to complications with electricity infrastructure and tree felling for drainage systems, prompting intervention from Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to expedite land clearance.
