The University of Lucknow (LU) plans to enhance student employability by introducing two new Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) courses in Retail Management and E-Commerce, set to begin in July 2023. This initiative comes in response to the India Skills Report 2025, which indicates that only 55% of BCom graduates possess the skills necessary for employment in a rapidly evolving job market influenced by artificial intelligence. The new programs will be structured over eight semesters, incorporating a mandatory two-semester apprenticeship that allows students to earn 16 credits through practical experience. Prof. Ram Milan, head of the commerce department, emphasized that these courses are designed to meet the requirements outlined in the National Education Policy 2020, ensuring students are equipped for job opportunities. Additionally, the university is implementing a selection process for 'professors of practice' and 'adjunct faculty' to integrate industry professionals into the academic framework, thereby enhancing curriculum design and teaching quality. The academic council approved these changes during a meeting on April 3, aiming to align higher education with industry and societal needs.
