The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) in India announced significant curriculum reforms to be phased in from the 2026-27 academic year. A key change is the introduction of a mandatory three-language formula for Class 6, requiring students to learn at least two Indian languages. This initiative aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) and aims for full implementation by 2031, coinciding with the first board exams under this scheme. Additionally, a two-level examination system will be introduced for mathematics and science in Class 9, allowing students to choose between a standard 80-mark exam and an advanced 25-mark paper that emphasizes higher-order thinking. The advanced paper's marks will not contribute to the overall aggregate but will be noted separately for students scoring 50% or above. Furthermore, CBSE will introduce computational thinking and artificial intelligence as compulsory subjects for Classes 9 and 10, with AI board exams starting in 2029. The gradual implementation of these reforms is designed to facilitate a smooth transition for students while maintaining flexibility in subject choices.
