As summer temperatures rise, Pune, Maharashtra, is likely to face a 15% water cut to ensure that the water supply lasts until the monsoon season. The city's water supply primarily comes from the Khadakwasla, Panshet, Varasgaon, and Temghar dams, managed by the state water resource department. Currently, the available water stock is 13.20 TMC (thousand million cubic feet), which is 45.29% of total capacity, compared to 12.04 TMC at the same time last year. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has been urged to implement this cut to avoid future shortages due to increasing demand driven by urbanization. PMC chief engineer Nandkishore Jagtap stated that two plans are being prepared: one for alternate day cuts, potentially saving 25% of water, and another for weekly cuts, saving 10%. Mayor Manjusha Nagpure emphasized that a decision will only be made after consulting with relevant departments. However, some officials, like PMC standing committee chairperson Shrinath Bhimale, oppose cuts due to existing water shortages in parts of the city, arguing it would worsen the situation for residents.
