Two separate incidents of leopard attacks in the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary in Bahraich district, Uttar Pradesh, have left a woman and a boy injured. On April 11, Shanti Devi, a 40-year-old resident of Semri Ghatahi village, was attacked while gathering firewood. The leopard severely injured her arm, which was later found severed nearby. A team from the Forest Department, conducting a plantation drive, rescued her and transported her to a Community Health Centre before referring her to Bahraich District Hospital. She has received ₹5,000 (approximately $60 USD) in immediate financial assistance, with an additional ₹1 lakh (roughly $1,200 USD) compensation for serious injuries forthcoming. In a separate incident on the same day, 15-year-old Lalu was attacked by a leopard while harvesting wheat in Majhanv village. Labourers nearby raised an alarm, scaring the leopard away, but Lalu sustained minor injuries. He also received initial treatment at a Community Health Centre and was referred to the district hospital. These incidents are part of a concerning trend, with five leopard attacks reported within the sanctuary in just the past week.
