Pune Police are set to enhance traffic enforcement by deploying AI cameras at nearly 500 locations across Pune, Maharashtra, India, as part of the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS). This initiative follows a successful pilot on Fergusson College Road that demonstrated effective real-time violation detection. Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil stated that the system is designed to ensure 'certainty of punishment,' with expectations that nearly 99% of traffic violation fines, or challans, will be generated automatically. This move comes as vehicle growth in Pune, which has around 7.8 million vehicles, continues to outpace infrastructure, leading to increased congestion. Planned improvements include upgrades to 32 key arterial roads, reduced signal delays, and enhanced public transport usage, which currently stands at a mere 11%. The AI-enabled ITMS will utilize automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) to detect various traffic violations, minimizing reliance on manual enforcement and creating a digital record of offenders. This comprehensive approach aims to foster better compliance with traffic rules and alleviate congestion in the city.
