The Jammu and Kashmir High Court has instructed the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to take action to bring back Aasim Sajjad, an Indian citizen who was deported to Pakistan following the April 2025 Pahalgam terror attack. Justice M.A. Chowdhary, while hearing a petition from Aasim's father, Sajjad Ahmed, directed the MHA to facilitate the return of Aasim and allow him to pursue his application for a long-term visa extension. The court also urged the MHA to consider granting citizenship to Aasim under Section 5 (1) (d) of the Citizenship Act, 1955. The court's ruling was based on the principles of human rights, highlighting the need for compassion in such cases. Sajjad Ahmed, a resident of Budhal in Rajouri district, had gone to Pakistan in 2005 to visit relatives and later married there. Despite applying for his son’s citizenship and visa extension, Aasim was forcibly deported without prior notice. The court has mandated that the MHA complete the necessary actions within eight weeks to ensure the family's reunion.
