Prime Minister Narendra Modi completed his self-enumeration for the Census 2027 on Wednesday, which is the first phase of the digital Houselisting and Housing Census (HLO). This census will collect data on housing conditions, amenities, and household assets. Modi encouraged citizens to participate by self-enumerating their household details. The self-enumeration phase started on April 1, 2026, and will be followed by a house-to-house enumeration by designated enumerators beginning April 16, 2026. The entire first phase is expected to be completed within a 30-day window. Census 2027 will encompass 784 districts, 5,127 statutory towns, 4,580 Census towns, and 639,902 villages across 36 states and Union Territories. The Census is a Union subject under the Constitution of India, with the Centre having announced its intent to conduct it last year. The reference date for most regions is set for March 1, 2027, while areas like Ladakh and parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand will have a reference date of October 1, 2026.
