In response to ongoing disruptions in petroleum supplies linked to the US-Israel conflict with Iran, the government of Nepal has decided to implement a two-day weekly holiday for government offices and educational institutions, now observing Saturdays and Sundays off. This decision was announced by Sasmit Pokharel, Nepal’s Minister for Education, Science and Technology, following a cabinet meeting. Previously, only Saturday was designated as a weekly holiday. The disruptions have caused petrol prices to rise to NPR 202 per liter, marking a 9.55% increase, while diesel prices have risen by 7%. The government is also rationing cooking gas as part of its response. Furthermore, a legal framework is being developed to facilitate the conversion of petrol and diesel vehicles to electric vehicles. The Nepal Oil Corporation has more than doubled the price of aviation fuel, leading to increased airfare, with significant hikes reported for international flights from key cities. The situation has been exacerbated by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical passage for fuel and gas, following military actions in the region.
