In response to a severe shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has enacted measures to accelerate the rollout of piped natural gas (PNG) across Mumbai. A circular issued by BMC's chief engineer (roads and traffic), Girish Nikam, on March 30 mandates that residents switch from LPG to PNG within three months in areas where piped gas infrastructure is available. To facilitate this transition, the BMC has deemed all existing and pending applications for PNG installation as approved, allowing immediate commencement of work. New applications will now be processed within 24 hours, significantly reducing bureaucratic delays. Additionally, financial requirements for Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL), the PNG provider, have been relaxed, enabling round-the-clock work and easing the need for prior no-objection certificates from authorities. This initiative aims to expedite the installation process and ensure a steady supply of cooking gas for Mumbai's residents.
