The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved the Gargai dam project in Palghar district, Maharashtra, aimed at augmenting Mumbai's potable water supply by 450 million litres per day. Initially stalled due to cost escalation concerns, the project will now be executed at a revised cost of ₹3,065.68 crore, which is 1.96% higher than the original estimate of ₹3,006 crore. The project involves constructing a 972-metre-long dam on the Gargai, a sub-tributary of the Vaitarna river. After the standing committee directed officials to renegotiate costs, the contractor agreed to proceed with only a slight increase in expenses. Despite opposition from the Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Congress regarding rehabilitation of affected villagers and environmental impacts, the ruling Mahayuti praised the project as necessary amid rising water demands. Additionally, the committee approved the formation of a special land acquisition cell to expedite land acquisition processes, which will operate for one year starting April 1.
