According to the Crisil Roti Rice Rate (RRR) report, the cost of a home-cooked vegetarian thali in India remained unchanged year-on-year in March, while the price of a non-vegetarian thali decreased by 1%. This decline is attributed to lower broiler chicken prices, which account for nearly 50% of the non-vegetarian thali cost. The stability in vegetarian thali prices is due to a balance between rising costs of tomatoes, edible oil, and fuel, and falling prices of onions, potatoes, and pulses. Specifically, tomato prices rose 33% year-on-year to ₹28 per kg, driven by delayed transplanting in key states like Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Conversely, onion prices fell 25% due to excess supply and weak demand, while potato prices dropped 13%. On a month-on-month basis, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian thali costs declined by 3% and 2%, respectively, reflecting seasonal demand shifts. However, vegetable oil prices increased by 6% year-on-year due to global supply disruptions, and LPG cylinder costs rose by 14%. These trends suggest ongoing volatility in food prices, influenced by both domestic supply and international market conditions.
