The Cyber Crime police in Kasaragod, Kerala, have filed a case against social media activist Khader Karippody for allegedly attempting to incite communal unrest through a Facebook post. The complaint, lodged by M L Ashwini, the NDA candidate and BJP president for Kasaragod district, led to the registration of the case on April 2. The police invoked non-bailable provisions under Section 190(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 125 of the Representation of the People Act. The complaint alleges that Karippody posted a video on March 31 that contained statements likely to promote enmity during the ongoing Assembly elections. The video reportedly referenced the murder of a religious scholar and implicated certain political leaders, raising tensions among communities. Following the complaint, the cyber police, led by sub-inspector P. Ravindran, have initiated an investigation and removed the video from Facebook. With the Assembly elections scheduled for April 9, police are intensifying efforts to monitor social media for fake news and hate speech.
