In Hyderabad, India, police recently discovered 414 cooking gas canisters hidden in a graveyard and arrested ten individuals attempting to sell them on the black market amid ongoing shortages caused by the Iran war. Sujata Sharma, a senior official in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, reported that authorities have intensified raids to combat hoarding of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) canisters, with around 2,600 raids conducted and approximately 700 cylinders seized in recent operations. The accused were selling both commercial and domestic canisters at inflated prices, with a commercial canister costing around ₹2,100 being sold for as much as ₹6,000. The total value of the seized canisters and vehicles used by the accused is nearly ₹2.2 million (approximately $26,500 USD). Despite these disruptions, Sharma assured that the supply of natural gas to domestic consumers remains stable and that prices for domestic LPG cylinders have not increased. To ease pressure on LPG supplies, the Indian government is promoting alternatives such as kerosene, coal, and biogas, while also accelerating the rollout of piped natural gas for households.
