Tesla, the electric vehicle manufacturer headed by Elon Musk, reported a 6.3% increase in quarterly auto sales, delivering 358,023 vehicles in the first quarter of 2026. However, this figure fell short of Wall Street's expectations of 368,903 deliveries, leading to a nearly 4% decline in stock prices during pre-market trading at Nasdaq. The company faced challenges due to the expiration of U.S. tax credits for electric vehicle purchases, which negatively impacted demand. Despite these issues, Tesla's sales of Model 3 and Model Y vehicles produced in its Shanghai factory surged 23.5% year-on-year, reaching 85,670 units in March. This marks the fifth consecutive month of rising sales in China, driven by recovering demand in Europe. Nevertheless, Tesla's market share in China has decreased from 10% in 2024 to 8% as competition intensifies, particularly from BYD, which has overtaken Tesla as the world's largest electric vehicle manufacturer.
