Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar has formally objected to the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) proposed restructuring of ward offices, expressing concerns about the potential inconvenience to citizens, particularly in rapidly developing areas such as Wagholi, Kharadi, Dhanori, and Kalas. In a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, dated March 5, Pawar emphasized that changes to long-standing ward boundaries could disrupt access to essential civic services. She noted that the current ward structure, established in 2007, has been functioning effectively and any modifications should prioritize administrative efficiency and public convenience.
The issue has sparked political opposition, with Nilesh Nikam, the leader of the opposition in PMC, alleging that the restructuring is politically motivated, aimed at influencing key posts in certain ward offices. He highlighted practical difficulties faced by residents, who are now required to travel further for civic services, causing unnecessary inconvenience. Sunil Tingre, president of the NCP city unit, echoed these concerns, stating that residents would have to navigate multiple bus routes to access basic services.
Civic officials have acknowledged the receipt of communications from both the chief minister and deputy chief minister but have refrained from commenting publicly. The state government is expected to seek a detailed explanation from the municipal commissioner regarding the rationale and implications of the restructuring before any further actions are taken.
