The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is finalizing the construction of 11 sewage treatment plants (STPs) as part of a river rejuvenation project funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). By the end of June, five STPs will be operational, including facilities at Warje, Wadgaon, Mundhwa, and Matsyakendra, with a combined capacity of 81 million litres per day (MLD). This initiative aims to significantly reduce pollution in the Mula-Mutha river, where Pune currently generates approximately 980 MLD of sewage, while the existing treatment capacity is only 477 MLD. The project also involves laying nearly 50 km of trunk sewer lines, of which 18 km has been completed. The total funding for the project is around ₹841 crore, with ₹625 crore already received from the Indian government. The original completion deadline has been extended to December 2026, with the project having commenced in September 2020.
