The Election Commission of India (ECI) is preparing to roll out the third and final phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in 17 states and five Union territories after the assembly elections scheduled for this month. The assembly elections are taking place in Kerala, Assam, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal, with results expected to be declared on May 4. The SIR is intended to update the electoral rolls for approximately 39 crore electors who have not yet been included in the revised lists. So far, SIR has been successfully conducted in 10 states and three Union territories, covering around 60 crore of the nearly 99 crore voters in India. The ECI had previously directed the remaining states to complete preparatory work for the SIR by April. However, the initiative has faced opposition from various political parties, particularly in Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, where legal challenges have been raised. Concerns have been voiced regarding the potential targeting of voters not aligned with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) during this cleanup exercise.
