The Election Commission of India suspended Biswajit Debnath, Officer-in-Charge of Kasba Police Station, only six days after his appointment due to a significant oversight: the omission of Sona Pappu, a known criminal, from the pre-poll list of history sheeters and active offenders. This lapse was considered serious enough to warrant immediate action. In addition to Debnath's suspension, the Election Commission executed a reshuffle within the Kolkata Police, transferring several Officers-in-Charge (OCs) of key police stations as part of its pre-election measures. The commission issued a 16-point directive requiring accurate lists of absconding and proclaimed offenders, with OCs held accountable for compliance. Police were instructed to execute pending non-bailable warrants and identify sensitive areas prone to electoral violence. Sona Pappu has been absconding following violence in the Kankulia Road area and is under investigation by the Enforcement Directorate for his alleged involvement in land grabbing and extortion. The reshuffle included the transfer of officers to specialized units such as the Detective Department and Special Task Force, with new appointments made to ensure effective law enforcement leading up to the elections.
