In a significant ruling, the Bengal appellate tribunal has ordered the inclusion of Motab Sheikh, the Congress candidate for the Farakka assembly constituency, in the electoral roll. Previously, Sheikh's name had been placed under adjudication and rejected. The tribunal, led by former Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, TS Sivagnanam, directed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to include his name in the valid electoral roll by 8 PM on Sunday. Sheikh had sought legal recourse through the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court before this decision. This ruling is notable as it represents the first judgment delivered by the appellate tribunal, which occurred on a Sunday, according to Sheikh's advocate, Firdous Samim. In response to the upcoming elections, West Bengal's Chief Electoral Officer, Manoj Kumar Agarwal, has begun visiting districts to assess the election situation, assuring that measures will be taken to ensure a safe voting environment.
