The Yukon government has promised to construct an elementary school in downtown Whitehorse, addressing long-standing community concerns. This commitment came after a unanimous vote on an opposition motion led by NDP MLA Lane Tredger, who emphasized the importance of having a school for local children and families. The previous government had planned to relocate École Whitehorse Elementary School to the Takhini neighborhood, which faced backlash from residents who feared losing access to a downtown school. Education Minister Scott Kent stated that the specifics of the new school's location are still under consideration, with options including the current site and two other locations outside downtown. A public consultation is ongoing, with over 1,600 responses received regarding potential sites. Kent noted that there is a significant youth population in downtown Whitehorse, reinforcing the necessity for a local educational facility.
