Three teams from Manchester Township Middle School in Manchester, New Jersey, recently excelled at the annual SeaPerch Challenge, a competition designed to engage students in real-world engineering problems. Launched in 2015 as part of a STEM initiative funded by a $10,000 grant from the Ocean First Foundation, the program allows eighth-grade students to build submersible remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). This year's theme, 'Storm Response: Technology in Action for Recovery and Relief,' tasked students with creating ROVs to simulate disaster recovery missions. The Manchester teams participated in a regional event in Neptune, winning the Overall Team Spirit Award and securing third place overall. The program not only enhances technical skills but also promotes teamwork and introduces students to potential careers in naval architecture and marine engineering. The success of the teams reflects the practical application of classroom lessons to real-world challenges, particularly in technology used for disaster response.
