Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport has conducted successful trials of a contactless international travel system, marking a significant advancement in air travel for Indians. The initiative, facilitated by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) in collaboration with IndiGo, the Digi Yatra Foundation, and the International Air Transport Association (IATA), utilizes biometric authentication to streamline the travel process from ticket booking to boarding. This pioneering effort, described as a first in India, aligns with IATA's global initiative to standardize contactless travel practices. The trials employed a Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) framework, allowing passengers to verify their identity through facial recognition while maintaining control over their personal data. This approach significantly reduces the need for physical documents and touchpoints during the airport journey, enhancing efficiency and safety. Officials emphasized that while biometric processing is already in place for domestic travel, extending it internationally will require adherence to global standards.
