In a bid to enhance child safety online, Andhra Pradesh's Minister Nara Lokesh announced plans to draft a comprehensive law regulating social media access for children under 13 years old. During a Group of Ministers (GoM) meeting, Lokesh highlighted the necessity of a graded, age-based framework to shield children from harmful content while promoting safe digital engagement. The law will also address users aged 13 to 16 years, aligning with global best practices for mental well-being. Officials are tasked with studying successful models from countries such as Singapore, Australia, and Denmark to create an effective regulatory framework. To enforce the new regulations, the government is considering secure age-verification methods, including the use of “age tokens” linked to DigiLocker, ensuring user privacy is maintained. The government plans to implement strict measures against the dissemination of abusive content, particularly targeting women, under existing IT laws. Additionally, awareness campaigns will be launched across the state, including digital safety education during school events and sessions for parents, to promote online safety practices. Representatives from major social media platforms have expressed their willingness to collaborate with the state government in this initiative.
