Passengers on Chennai's suburban rail network are urging Southern Railway to amend ticketing rules that currently require them to purchase separate tickets for suburban travel to reach their boarding points for long-distance trains. A resident from Avadi shared an experience where he was fined ₹500 for using a reserved ticket on a suburban train to reach Tiruvallur. While passengers arriving in Chennai by long-distance trains can travel on suburban trains without additional tickets, this rule does not apply in the opposite direction. K Bhaskar, a former member of the Divisional Railway Users' Consultative Committee, emphasized that recent policy changes, such as allowing upgrades and boarding point changes, demonstrate that similar reforms for suburban travel are feasible. In response, Senthamil Selvan, the chief public relations officer, stated that the request will be examined and a meeting will be organized to discuss the issue.
