This week, Storm Erminio has significantly impacted Greece, leading to heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds across much of the country. The most severe conditions were reported in southeastern Greece and on several southern Aegean islands, including Crete, where flooding affected streets and vehicles. In Attica, which includes Athens, a weather station recorded 132mm (5.2 inches) of rain within 24 hours. The coastal town of Nea Makri was particularly hard hit, with 50mm of rain falling in just two hours, resulting in one fatality as a man was swept away while trying to escape his flooded home. Gale-force winds caused additional disruption, downing trees and canceling ferry services, while also bringing Saharan dust that covered Crete in thick orange-red clouds. Meanwhile, southern Italy faced heavy rainfall leading to swollen rivers and avalanche warnings in the southern Apennines, where some areas recorded 1.5 meters (4.9 feet) of fresh snowfall. In Afghanistan and Pakistan, heavy rains have also caused severe flooding and fatalities, with Afghanistan reporting over 50 deaths and significant damage to infrastructure.
