YSR Congress Party president YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has introduced an alternative proposal for the capital of Andhra Pradesh, suggesting the creation of an integrated capital area named 'Mavigun,' which would span a 110-kilometre urban corridor from Machilipatnam to Vijayawada and Guntur. This proposal comes as the Lok Sabha passed the AP Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which designates Amaravati as the permanent capital. Jagan argued that the current plan for Amaravati is financially unviable, with infrastructure costs potentially reaching ₹2 lakh crore (approximately $240 million USD) and significant unfulfilled commitments to farmers who contributed land for the capital's development. He stated that the combined population of the three cities in the proposed capital area is nearly 4 million, and argued for a model that promotes balanced growth across the region. YSR Congress Party MPs, led by parliamentary leader P Mithun Reddy, expressed their dissent by walking out of the Lok Sabha, claiming the Amaravati bill does not address the concerns of the people, particularly the farmers. Jagan emphasized that the party is not opposed to Amaravati but to the perceived corruption and mismanagement regarding capital development.
