Fatty liver disease is emerging as a significant health concern in India, affecting individuals in their 30s. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), warns that certain drinks can exacerbate liver damage. He identifies three beverages to avoid: sugary sodas, which are high in fructose and linked to increased fat accumulation in the liver; alcohol, which can accelerate liver inflammation and fibrosis; and sports or energy drinks, known for their high sugar content and potential to cause acute liver injury. Dr. Sethi emphasizes that even moderate alcohol consumption can be harmful for individuals with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). To promote liver health, he suggests safer alternatives like sparkling water, coffee, green tea, and black tea, which can help manage liver fat and reduce the risk of severe liver conditions.
