The Public Works Department (PWD) in New Delhi is set to conduct a survey for a proposed five-kilometre bypass road in Sangam Vihar, which aims to improve accessibility for over one million residents. The road will connect the Sangam Vihar T-point near the shooting range to J Block. While PWD officials argue that the corridor will provide an alternate route and significantly reduce travel times from 25 minutes to just 5-6 minutes, environmental activists are concerned about the potential ecological impact. The area is near the Southern Ridge and Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary, and the project requires clearance from the Ridge Management Board due to its encroachment on forest land. The survey will assess approximately 125,000 square metres of land and determine the need for any tree felling or transplanting. Local MLA Chandan Kumar Choudhary supports the project, stating it will alleviate congestion in the area. However, activists like Bhavreen Kandhari emphasize the need for careful evaluation of the long-term environmental consequences of such infrastructure projects.
