The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has successfully dismantled a major international gold smuggling syndicate operating through Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. Following a coordinated operation on April 6 and 7, authorities arrested five individuals and seized 3.356 kg of high-purity gold, valued at approximately ₹5 crore (about $600,000 USD). The gold was ingeniously concealed in paste form within capsule-shaped packets, demonstrating the sophistication of the smuggling methods used. Investigations revealed that the syndicate involved foreign nationals and local facilitators who exploited longer layovers at the airport to facilitate covert transfers. The DRI noted that the contraband was transferred using a pre-arranged passcode system within sensitive areas, such as washrooms and smoking zones, allowing them to bypass Customs scrutiny. Preliminary investigations suggest that this network is part of a larger cross-border smuggling operation involving suspected Bangladeshi nationals collaborating with domestic handlers. The DRI remains committed to addressing organized economic offenses and curbing such sophisticated smuggling operations.
