The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has unveiled a new curriculum that includes compulsory artificial intelligence (AI) and computational thinking courses starting from Class 9, alongside a restructured language education system. These reforms align with the National Education Policy 2020 and will be phased in over several years, impacting students across India.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a comprehensive overhaul of its curriculum, set to be implemented over the next few years. Key changes include the introduction of a compulsory computational thinking (CT) and artificial intelligence (AI) course for students starting in Class 9 from the 2027-28 academic year. Additionally, language education will transition to a three-language system, with compulsory R3-level language textbooks introduced in Class 6 beginning in the 2026-27 session. CBSE Chairman Rahul Singh stated that textbooks for CT and AI are nearing completion, with the first cohort expected to take board examinations in 2029. Optional advanced mathematics and science assessments will be available for students entering Class 9 this year, with the first assessments scheduled for 2028. The curriculum will also make art education, physical education, vocational education, and interdisciplinary studies compulsory. These reforms align with the National Education Policy 2020 and aim to enhance educational quality across India.
