In response to ongoing global fuel supply challenges due to the United States-Iran war, the Indian government is accelerating the expansion of the piped natural gas (PNG) network. This initiative targets 110 high-priority urban areas, encompassing 190 districts and over 300 municipalities. During a recent review meeting led by Housing and Urban Affairs Secretary Srinivas Katikithala and Petroleum and Natural Gas Secretary Neeraj Mittal, district magistrates and municipal officials were urged to expedite permissions for expanding the PNG infrastructure. The government aims to unlock potential by providing nearly 30 lakh (3 million) household connections in areas where pipeline infrastructure is already established. A focused campaign is planned for major cities, including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Delhi-NCR, Lucknow, Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Pune, Surat, and Varanasi, to achieve near-universal PNG coverage. The initiative aligns with the national urban transition agenda, treating PNG expansion as a national priority.
