SpaceX has announced a significant acquisition of wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar for about $17 billion, aimed at enhancing its Starlink satellite network's 5G capabilities. The deal, which involves up to $8.5 billion in cash and stock, will allow SpaceX to develop next-generation satellites that can increase network capacity by over 100 times. Additionally, EchoStar's Boost Mobile subscribers will benefit from direct-to-cell satellite services, extending coverage to areas lacking traditional mobile service. This move comes as wireless data usage in the U.S. has surged, reaching a record 132 trillion megabytes in 2024, a 35% increase from previous highs. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has indicated that the deal could enhance competition and improve connectivity for millions of Americans. SpaceX's ongoing development of its Starship rocket is crucial for deploying these advanced satellites, with operational missions expected to commence early next year. Following the acquisition, EchoStar will continue to operate its various services, including satellite TV and internet.
