Ahead of the 2027 Ardh Kumbh, the Haridwar administration in Uttarakhand has proposed relocating all raw meat shops from the urban area to Sarai village on the outskirts. Mayor Kiran Jaiswal stated that the proposal, set for discussion at the Municipal Corporation Board meeting on April 6, aims to maintain hygiene and respect religious sentiments as millions of devotees are expected to visit. Currently, only 20 licensed meat shops exist, while many operate illegally, creating unhygienic conditions and attracting stray dogs. Hindu organizations have protested against the presence of meat shops, and the proposal has received support from local leaders, including Mahant Ravindra Puri, who emphasized the need to protect religious sentiments during the Kumbh Mela. The Municipal Corporation will also address the issue of cooked meat served in hotels and roadside eateries during the meeting.
