Himachal Pradesh is witnessing a shift in its horticulture landscape as the state’s horticulture department promotes the cultivation of persimmon (Japani phal) across five districts: Mandi, Sirmaur, Kangra, Bilaspur, and Solan. This initiative is part of the Himachal Pradesh Subtropical Horticulture, Irrigation and Value Addition (HP SHIVA) project, which aims to enhance the income of farm households in subtropical regions. Currently, Kullu district accounts for nearly 90% of the state's persimmon production, primarily in the Panarsa area. The project covers 358 hectares across the state, with clusters established in the Barot and Prashar valleys of Mandi. The Fuyu variety of persimmon, known for its adaptability and high market demand, is being cultivated. Deputy director of horticulture, Sanjay Gupta, highlighted the potential of persimmon cultivation to boost the rural economy, especially since it is easy to grow and not labor-intensive.
